This week in Reading and Writing Workshop...
We are continuing our work as researchers.  We will read and learn about chickens.  We will use our research notebooks to organize our learning and the facts we write as we read.  This week we will begin synthesizing our information and create a chicken habitat during our science time.  We will have to think about the needs of a chicken and how to protect them from predators and weather.  We will present our projects when we finish.

This week in Math...
We are relating addition to subtraction.  We will think about two parts making a whole and how a whole can be broken down into two parts.  We will solve problems where we have to decide if we should use addition or subtraction.  We will also participate in a fun activity called a 3 Act Task that involves a situation with Humpty Dumpty.

This week in Science...
We will work on our chicken habitat projects.  Our list of "need to knows" will help drive our work.  We will design a habitat based on what we have learned about chicken's needs in their environment, food needs and how to protect chickens.   We will think about what a chicken's primary need for a safe habitat would be (hint: to lay eggs).

Have a great week!

February 27-March 3, 2017

Engineering Day was a wonderful learning opportunity! We listened to professionals describe what they do as engineers and we tried a few activities! In our classroom we made flower pots from newspapers. This helps save plastic from going into landfills and the newspaper is biodegradable so new plants can go straight into the ground with the little pots!  Engineers help find solutions to all kinds of problems.

Next week we will celebrate Read Across America day! We will have fun reading activities all week to celebrate reading.  Dr. Seuss' birthday is March 2nd.  As part of our week we will learn about this amazing author and read some of his stories! We look forward to celebrating reading with fun activities!  We will have a Read-a-Thon on Friday, March 3rd.  Please allow your child to bring 3-5 books from home for this event.  Please make sure their name is written inside the book.

-finding a small object or moment or detail that holds the big feeling
-looking with poet's eyes at the world around us
-writing about our feelings and how we see ordinary things in new, fresh ways
-finding ingredients for poems
-Showing, not telling

This week in Math...

February 20-24, 2017

Our Valentine's Day Party was a huge success! Thank you to our homeroom parents, for working so hard to make it perfect! We loved having time to celebrate our friendships!

Our school was disinfected over the three day weekend.  We've had another round of the Stomach Flu going around so we have been taking extra time to disinfect our classroom and materials as well as washing our hands frequently.  If your child is sick please make sure they are symptom and fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.  This will help everyone stay healthy.

We want to give the students a broad a view of engineering possibilities, so we have invited engineers from many different disciplines. We will learn about engineering, how people create solutions to everyday problems, how people merge art and technology to create wonderful new things or how people work with teams to change the landscape of our world!
Engineering Day will run for the first half of the day February 24th and be organized into three 45-minute rotations.
-Rotation 1: 8:15am-9:00am
-Rotation 2: 9:00am-9:45am
-Rotation 3: 9:45am-10:30am

This week in Reading Workshop...
We will begin our unit on Poetry.  We will read many different types of poetry and think about why readers want to read poetry.  We will learn about the forms of poetry and how the reader understands what the author is trying to say to their reader.

This week in Writer's Workshop...
We will also begin our unit on Poetry.  We will think about how poets see things with fresh, new eyes.  We will think about how poets form their writing with line breaks so their reader can experience their poem.  We will also think about poems are big ideas in tiny packages.  We will be creating a collection of poems during this unit.

This week in Math...
We will continue our unit on the Make 10 strategy.  We will extend our strategy and incorporate all of the strategies we have learning into our problem solving.  Please review the work that will come home in the Tuesday folder so you can help your student with this strategy.

This week in Science...
