January 29-February 2, 2018

Parents, please remember that I am scheduled to be out of the classroom from the 29-31.  Sonia Gulia is going to be my sub, and Miss Hendrickson will be in the classroom as well.  Your kiddos are in good hands!

The 1st Grade P.E. Program will be on February 6.  If your child is in groups 1, 2, & 3, they will perform at 5:45.  If your child is in groups 4, 5, & 6, they will perform at 6:20.  Every 1st Grader must be accompanied by an adult and may not just be dropped off at school for the performance.

This week in Reading and Writing Workshop...
We will continue our research unit.  We have been researching the seasons.  We have collected information about each season using nonfiction books and Pebble Go.  This week, we will begin recording the information to be displayed in the hallway soon!

This week in Math workshop...
We will continue to look at place value. Students will use objects, pictures, and expanded & standard forms to represent numbers up to 99.  They will also recognize the quantity of structured arrangements.  We will begin learning how to show a number using expanded form equations.

This week in Science...
We will begin learning about objects in the sky.  We will learn about the sun and moon, and discuss night and day.

This week in Social Studies...
We are learning about The World Around Us.  This week we will learn about Natural Resources and how to conserve those resources.

Our Life Skill of the week is Resourcefulness! Being resourceful means to respond to challenges and opportunities in innovative and creative ways.  We will talk as a class about appropriate times to laugh and have fun at school and at home.

Parents, please remember that I am scheduled to be out of the classroom from the 29-31.  The closing might be pushed back a couple of days, but it will still be next week.  I am still going to take 3 days off, I am just not sure if it will be Monday-Wednesday or Wednesday-Friday.  I’ll keep you and the kiddos updated so there is no confusion.

This week in Reading and Writing Workshop...
We will begin a unit called "Readers and Writers Research Together."  This unit bundles student expectations for understanding expository text and research as they note and synthesize what is learned from researching to find answers to their questions.  This will be a class research project, guided by the teacher.

We will begin a unit on Seasons.  Students will identify and describe characteristics of each season, when and how the seasons change and why they change at the same time each year.

Our Life Skill of the week is Sense of Humor! Having a sense of humor is to laugh and be playful without hurting others.  We will talk as a class about appropriate times to laugh and have fun at school and at home.

January 8-12, 2018

It was so good to see all of the kiddos again today!  We took a lot of time this morning talking about what we all did over the break. 

We will be discussing the rules and expectations again throughout this week.  Please remind your child about the importance of being respectful in our classroom community and an attentive listener.

This week in Reading Workshop...
We will be learning about literary nonfiction.  Literary nonfiction gives the reader facts about a topic through a story.  Biographies and Autobiographies are in this genre.

This week in Writing Workshop...
This week, we will begin learning how to write a letter.  We will discuss why we might want to write a letter, and we will learn about the different parts of a friendly letter.


This week in Math workshop...
We will wrap up our learning about equal parts and fractions.  We will observe different objects and determine if they are divided equally.  This will lead into our fractions unit where we will learn about halves and fourths.
We will then begin learning to tell time to the half hour using analog and digital clocks.

This week in Science...
We will continue learning about weather and the air around us.  We will observe and record the weather in our science notebooks.  We will also discuss different tools scientists use to measure the weather.

This week in Social Studies...
We will begin learning about the world around us.  We will learn about maps and globes, directions, and different landforms and bodies of water.

Our Life Skill of the week is Pride! Pride is having satisfaction from doing one’s personal best.  We will talk as a class about times that we have been proud at school and at home.
