May 15-19, 2017

Last week was a busy week for everyone at Caraway.  It has been nice to get back on our regular schedule for the next few days!  We are all very excited about Field day on Friday!

Reminders:
Monday (5/15):  Book Fair Preview

Wednesday (5/17):  Book Fair during our Regular Library time
Thursday (5/18): Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast & KnOWLedge Night

Friday (5/19): Field Day

Homework Bags will not be sent home any more this year.  I have to inventory all of my classroom and district books.  If you still have any of the books that I sent home, please send them back as soon as possible!  I will still email a homework menu, but it is completely optional.  Please have your child read every night for 20 minutes.

KnOWLedge Night is coming up soon.  On the evening of May 18th we will be hosting a Reading Restaurant. We will have a reservation time for you and your child to come and participate.  The reservation times will be sent closer to May 18th.  We are excited to share our love or reading and our portfolios with our families!

Field Day will be Friday, May 19th!  We will be outside from 10:00am-12:00am.  Please apply sunscreen at home. Plan to send your child in clothes that they can get wet in.  They will need tennis shoes, socks, play clothes, water bottle labeled with their name, a towel and and extra set of clothes (including underwear) socks and shoes (they can be something other than tennis shoes).  We will have a picnic lunch at12:30pm that day.

Our
Classroom Play Date will be Wednesday, May 31.  Your kiddo is welcome to bring a board game, special coloring books, card games, etc  No electronic devices please.  We will play that morning, and then watch a movie in the afternoon.  This day has always been a big hit in the past!

End of the Year Party: Awards and Talent Show 8:30-10:30 am, Thursday, June 1stThis year we will have our End of the Year Awards ceremony in our classroom.  It will be followed by a brunch reception and our class Talent Show.  Your children have thought of ideas for their performance.  We will have a little time to practice at school, but,  please talk with your child about their choice and encourage them to practice at home! 


This week in Reading Workshop...
We will be using all of the strategies we have learned while reading during our Book Clubs.  Last week we started book clubs and we practiced reading with our friends.  This week we will focus on one strategy a day and record our thinking in our Reader's Response Notebook.


This week in Writing Workshop...

We will be focusing on using the Writing Process as we wrap up our Family Writing and create stories.  Our writers have grown so much this year.  We can't wait to share all of our progress with you at KnOWLedge Night!


This week in Math...

We will be practicing comparison subtraction.  Comparison subtract deals with two quantities and you have to find out how much more one is than another.  We will apply our math strategies to problem solving.  We will solve a variety of problems to practice these strategies. 

This week in Science...

We will wrap up our learning on Plants.  We will discuss the function of plant parts and why they help our environment.  We will learn about the interdependence of plants and animals in our community.

May 8-12, 2017

Teacher Appreciation week is the most amazing week of my life! I feel so appreciated! The flowers were beautiful! The cards were heartwarming! The treats were delicious! I am stocked up on school supplies for the rest of this year and next year! The gift cards will be a lovely reminder of how much I am loved by your children! Thank you for your generous gifts! I will cherish these last few weeks with your children!

We will have a Class Play Date in the classroom on Wednesday, May 31.  This is a day when your child can bring 1 game (that will fit in their back pack) from home.  The summer is fast approaching and many kiddos will not see any of their classmates until August 22nd.  We will have a morning of play and camaraderie.  Please do not send electronic devices.  In the years past, kiddos have brought games like connect 4, Candyland, and Hungry, Hungry Hippos (just to name a few).

This week in Reading Workshop...
We will continue reviewing our reading comprehension strategies.  We will focus on making connections.  We've been discussing our read aloud The Land of Stories The Enchantress Returns as we use our reading strategies. 

This week in Writing...
We will be working on various projects to prepare our portfolios for KnOWLedge Night.  We can wait to share our work with you!

This week in Math...
We will continue our unit on inequality and comparison subtraction.  We worked really hard last week thinking about how to make amounts equal and create equations that are balanced.  Check out our work on Google Classroom from last week!

This week in Science...
We will continue our study of Plants.  We will learn about the parts of a plant and the functions of those parts.  We will also plant a seed and watch it sprout and grow!
