October 29-November 2, 2018


I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  The weather was absolutely gorgeous!  I can’t believe that October is almost over.  Before you know it, we will be out for Winter Break!

Field Trip Info:
This Friday, we will be going to ZACH Scott theatre for our fall field trip.  Here are some important field trip reminders:
1.  Make sure your child wears clothing appropriate for the weather.
2. Your child will need a lunch from home on this day.  We will eat in the classroom before we leave and will have a snack when we return.
3.  If you have not turned in your child’s permission slip, please do so by Thursday, Nov. 1.
4.  We will leave school by 11:15 and will return around 1:45.

Tuesday (10/30): Tuesday folders will come home.

This week in Writing Workshop
We will begin writing expository/nonfiction texts.  We will discuss how writers choose a topic that they are an expert on.  We will begin to think about our interests and what we want to teach our readers about.

This week in Math
We will begin to explore Subtraction & doubles addition strategies. 

This week in Reading Workshop
We will continue learning about expository/nonfiction texts.  We are learning the different nonfiction text features we can use to help us comprehend nonfiction texts and we are thinking about and discussing why someone might want/need to read a nonfiction text. 

This week in Social Studies
We will begin learning about chronology.  We will discuss and think about how living things grow and change over time.  We will also think about what it was like in past and what our future might be like.  We will learn to read a calendar and we will work as a class to make a timeline.

This week in Science
We will explore magnets and patterns of movement.

The Life Skill of the Week is
Patience- the ability to wait calmly for something or someone.

Our subscription to IXL has expired. We are in the process of transferring student licenses to an alternate math program. We hope to be back up and running soon. We apologize for any inconvenience. Khan Academy is another option for families in the interim and it is free.

This week in Writing Workshop

Students will begin using capitalization at the beginning of a sentence and when using the pronoun ‘I’.  Students will also begin to recognize when they should use end punctuation.  In science and social studies, we will record facts and observations in our various notebooks.

This week in Math
We will continue to explore measurement.  We will use many different units of nonstandard measurement to measure various objects around the classroom.  We will discuss what we need to do to ensure our measurements are accurate. We will continue to use different strategies to help us solve a math story problem!

This week in Reading Workshop
We will begin learning about expository/nonfiction texts.  We will learn the different nonfiction text features we can use to help us comprehend nonfiction texts and we will think about why someone might want/need to read a nonfiction text.  We will read to learn about different topics we are interested in.  We will continue to practice independent reading and partner reading, and we will also continue to build our stamina.

This week in Social Studies
We will continue learning about some of our state’s symbols.  We will learn about the Mockingbird, Bluebonnet, Texas Flag & Texas Pledge, and other state symbols.

This week in Science
We will continue learning about forms of energy.  We will explore light energy, sound energy and thermal energy.

The Life Skill of the Week is
Responsibility- to be accountable for one’s actions.

October 1-5, 2018


It was so fun to see everyone at the 40th Anniversary celebration on Saturday.  It was awesome to watch the kiddos that participated in the program.  They showed amazing courage by getting up in front of all of those people!  I am so proud to be a Caraway Owl!

Reader bags went home again today, and will continue to do so every Monday (unless you are told otherwise).  Please remember that the purpose of reading these books is to build accuracy and fluency.  Multiple reads is required!  If your child is reading the book with fluency (smooth voice, not choppy) and accuracy (very few mistakes), they can bring the bag (with book in it) back to school on Wednesday to trade for a new book.

Wednesday- Can bring book back to trade out if needed
Friday- Books due back.

This week in Writing Workshop…
We will continue working on our small moment stories.  We will discuss how writers narrow their topic down to make our stories more interesting.  We will continue to think about how we can organize our stories so that it makes sense to the reader by using a beginning, middle and end.  Students will begin using capitalization at the beginning of a sentence and when using the pronoun ‘I’.  Students will also begin to recognize when they should use end punctuation.  In science and social studies, we will record facts and observations in our various notebooks.

This week in Math…
We will continue learning how to solve addition problems using various strategies.  We will work with many different math tools to help us, such as a number track, a hundred chart, manipulatives and pictures. The students will use different strategies to help them solve a math story problem!

This week in Reading Workshop…
We will begin learning different strategies readers use to understand a story better.  We will discuss how making connections to our own life, other books and the world around us can be a helpful tool for a reader.  We will continue to practice independent reading and partner reading, and we will also continue to build our stamina.

This week in Social Studies…
We will be learning about some of our nation’s symbols such as the Flag of the United States, Statue of Liberty, and the Bald Eagle.  We will also discuss the importance of Constitution Day as a day to celebrate our country’s freedoms!

This week in Science…
We will continue learning about Changes from Heat. We will focus on the question, What happens to different materials when they are heated?  The students will observe what happens to crayons when they are heated.  Later, we will also observe what happens to drink mix (Gatorade mix) when we remove heat by putting them in the freezer.  This will be an edible experiment.  Please let me know if you would prefer that your child not eat the homemade Popsicle.

The Life Skill of the Week is…
Perseverance- to keep trying until you get it!
