April 1-5, 2019


I wanted to send out a huge thank you for all of the wonderful Teacher Appreciation gifts I received throughout the week! I am so grateful to have your support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

It was so fun to see so many of my students at Family Fit & Fun night. There was so much to do! Maggie had a blast in the ambulance!

We will have our spring field trip to the Thinkery on May 9, 2019.  We will need 4 parent chaperones in order to comply with the Thinkery’s adult to student ratio. There is still 1 spot available!  Please email me if you are able and willing to attend.  I will send out information to the chaperones once all spots are filled.

This week in Reading & Writing Workshop
We will begin digging deeper into research. In this unit, the students will use what we learned about research to complete a self-chosen research project. The students will choose a topic, ask questions, develop a research plan, and read different nonfiction texts to find the answers to their questions. In 1st Grade, this is not expected to be done independently, but with adult assistance. We will also be reading and learning about the chicks and chickens!


This week in Math Workshop
We will be revisiting equality & inequality before learning to use symbols (>,<,=) to compare and contrast numbers to 99. We will also continue using strategies in problem solving. We will focus on subtraction problems that ask the questions “how much greater” and “how much less”.

This week in Science
We will continue learning about the characteristics of a bird, their body parts, life cycle and how they depend on their environment around them to survive.

This week in Social Studies
We will think about different jobs in our community that produce goods and/or provide services, and begin thinking about earning and saving money.

Our Life Skill of the week is Sense of Humor!

March 25-29, 2019


Welcome back! I hope everyone had a fun, relaxing spring break. I got to spend time with friends and family, and I got to catch up on laundry and chores. Not very exciting, but it felt good to be productive!

This week’s homework will be reading on RAZ kids and working in Dreambox Math. Please have your kiddo do the comprehension quiz after reading the books! Homework bags will begin going home again next Monday.

This week in Reading
We will review what we learned about Poetry. We will also be reading different books by Liz Scanlon, the author coming to our school on Wednesday, March 27.

This week in Writing Workshop
We will be writing small moment stories about our spring break adventures. We will be reviewing the writing process, and working on organizing our stories with a beginning, middle and end.

This week in Math workshop
We will finish up our addition and subtraction unit.  We will continue to think about how addition and subtraction are related.  We are learning about fact families, missing addends, and how we can think about addition to solve a subtraction problem and vice versa. This week, we will be applying this knowledge to problem solving situations and assessing for mastery.

This week in Science
We will review and finish up learning about Mammals.  After this, we will learn about the characteristics of a bird, their body parts, life cycle and how they depend on their environment around them to survive.

This week in Social Studies
We will be talking about goods and services. We will discuss the difference between a good and a service, and we will think about different jobs in our community that produce goods and/or provide services, and begin thinking about earning and saving money.

Our Life Skill of the week is Patience!

This next week will be STEAM week! 1st Grade’s challenge is called the Humpty Dumpty Challenge. In this challenge, students will work cooperatively to construct the tallest wall possible so that Humpty Dumpty will crack open when he falls. We will use our OWL time to think, design, create, test and redesign if needed. It should be a lot of fun!

We will finish up our Poetry Unit. This week we will think about author’s purpose for writing a poem. We will read poems with Alliteration. We will also continue to critique poems, thinking about sensory details, and making mental pictures of poems.

This week in Writing Workshop
We will finish up our Poetry Unit.  We have written free verse poems, Acrostic Poems, and we are working on our Sensory Poems. We will also write poems using alliteration and rhyme.

This week in Math workshop

Caraway City Limits was a huge success!  Some of the paintings sold for thousands of dollars!  Isn’t that amazing?!

This week in Reading
We will continue reading and analyzing poetry.  We will think like a poet and use our senses to create a picture of the poem in our mind.  We will listen for rhythm and rhyme, alliteration. We will begin to critique poems.

This week in Writing Workshop
We will begin our poetry unit.  We will talk about how to think like a poet and listen for rhythm, rhyme and line breaks.  We will try to apply this to our writing.  We will talk about how poems are different from stories with a beginning, middle and end.

This week in Math workshop
We will revisit addition and subtraction.  In this unit we will think about how addition and subtraction are related.  We will learn about fact families, missing addends, and how we can think about addition to solve a subtraction problem and vise versa.

This week in Science
We will begin learning about animals.  This week, we will be learning about fish.  We will learn about the characteristics of a fish, their body parts, life cycle and how they depend on their environment around them to survive.

This week in Social Studies
We will be talking about needs and wants. We will think about the basic needs we have to have to survive and the fun things we want. 

Our Life Skill of the week is Responsibility!
