January 7-11, 2019

Welcome back!  I am excited to begin this new semester!  We have several fun surprises in store for this semester.

Starting tomorrow, we will be hosting a student teacher in our classroom.  His name is Mr. Terrell.  He is a student at Concordia University, and he will be with us for 7 weeks.  He will be sending out a letter of introduction in the next few days.

Fairy Tale Parade-
This Friday, we will have our annual 1st Grade Fairy Tale Parade.  Your child is welcome to dress up as their favorite Fairy Tale or Folktale character as we parade around the school.  Some example characters are The 3 Little Pigs, Goldilocks, the 3 bears, the Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, a princess/prince/king/queen, Snow White, Rumplestiltskin, Cinderella, Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk
Parents are invited to attend if you are able!

This week in Reading and Writing Workshop
We will review Fairy Tales, Folktales and Fables.  lsd

This week in Math workshop
This week we will review fractions for a couple of days.  After this, we will begin to explore and work with the Make 10 Addition fact strategy.  We will use our prior knowledge of facts that equal 10 to help us solve other facts.  (9+3.  We know 9+1=10, so 10 and 2 more is 12.)

This week in Science
We will begin learning about weather and the air around us.  We will discuss different types of weather (sunny, cloudy, rainy, hot, cold) and explore the air around us.  We will also discuss and explore different tools that are used to measure weather.

This week in Social Studies
We will be learning about maps and directions.

Our Life Skill of the week is Effort! We will talk as a class about how everyone’s personal best can look different, but we should still try!
